Nouns, Gender, and Articles

Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine. This is grammar gender, not biological gender. A table is feminine: . A bank is masculine: .
The basic articles
- the passport
- the appointment
- the documents
- the copies
For “a” or “some”:
- a hotel
- a pharmacy
- some pesos
- some questions
Fast gender guesses
Most nouns ending in -o are masculine:
- the bank
- the document
- the receipt
Most nouns ending in -a are feminine:
- the office
- the card
- the copy
There are exceptions. Learn common nouns with their article as one chunk:
- the day
- the map
- the hand
- the photo
Making plurals
If the word ends in a vowel, add s.
- the copy, the copies
- the procedure, the procedures
If the word ends in a consonant, add es.
- the paper, the papers
- the reservation, the reservations
Do not overthink gender while speaking
If you say , people will still understand you. But if you always learn nouns with or , your ear will gradually correct you.
